The Royal Photographic Society Recently Announced Its Hundred Heroines

On the occasion of the centenary anniversary of women’s suffrage in the United Kingdom, the Royal Photographic Society, which was founded in 1853 and is presided over by Her Majesty the Queen, announced its list of the 100 best women photographers working today. It calls these photographers the Hundred Heroines. The list was culled from over 1,300 nominees and includes Zoe Leonard, Carrie Mae Weems, Zanele Muholi, Sophie Calle, LaToya Ruby Frazier and Rinko Kawauchi, among others.

The list aims to raise the profile of women in the photo industry, which still remains imbalanced in favor of male photographers.
