This past year was one of many sorrows, calamitous wildfires in California among them. Wildfires are not a new phenomenon on the West Coast, but their intensity is increasing thanks to climate change. For the past five years, Stuart Palley has been capturing their devastating beauty alongside the firefighters who contain them, sometimes at the expense of their own lives.
Terra Flamma: Wildfires at Night, a book published by Schiffer this past September, features 100 of Palley’s photographs of wildfires at night taken at 45 different conflagrations in locations ranging from urban Los Angeles to the towering pines of the Shasta Trinity National Forest in far Northern California.
The book aims to raise awareness that wildfires are not individual events, but rather, a worsening phenomenon.
