Growing up my skin color had to be a part of who I was at all moments, there was no way to avoid it. It was pointed out to me as if it determined my character. I was always told to “dial it down” as if I was being too much of something. I was living my life waiting for somebody else to tell me who I was supposed to be. I allowed other people to use pieces of me to define me. Searching within my work I investigate who I am outside of my skin color and redefine myself not as a black man but as a human being.
