Mundane Mysteries seeks to investigate Canoa Quebrada’s syncretic experience, inherited for generations of mixed cultures and beliefs, which has allowed them to keep a harmonious connection between science and mysticism, and to adapt the boundaries of truth and knowledge to fit their ancestral wisdom and empirical learning. Could their local mythology be suffering consequences from increasing contrasts brought by geographical and cultural gentrification?

This project was born out of a continuously growing relationship of affection and respect for the town and its people, that began in 2012 when I first visited it. The images shown here, yet the early stages of this investigation, are permeated by the hazy boundaries between fantasy and reality. Whether through symbolic visual elements or a direct depiction of Noah’s Ark in a drawing, they contain a sense of particular devotion and transmit a kind of hidden message that goes beyond a sense of proof or veracity.
