About
Monica Jane Frisell is a photographer and story teller living in New York. Frisell works predominantly in analog film photography, putting great emphasis on darkroom practice. Over the last few years, Frisell has been gathering stories and portraits in an attempt to meld her art practice with elements of documentary.
In 2015, while in Nepal, she documented Domestic Workers with interviews and portraits. This series has been shown at Universities in Australia, in partnership with Konika Minolta as part of the Out of the Shadows; Portraits of Domestic Workers exhibition.
With her ongoing project, Looking Forward; Portraits from an RV, Frisell is working on gathering American stories and portraits to try and give a wider vision of what America is now. She has retrofitted a 1988 Toyota Seabreeze RV into a moving live/work space including a small portable darkroom.
Frisell has extensive experience in running full professional photo labs which includes master black and white printing and film development. She has also been in charge of many photography workshops while working at The Evergreen State Colleges’ photo facilities.
