Focus on the Story is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Washington, DC, with a mission to support and encourage visual storytellers of diverse backgrounds in bringing attention to critical issues, bridging cultural gaps and sparking social change.
We were founded on the driving principle that photography can spark meaningful conversations at the intersection of policy, civic engagement and visual storytelling. To support inspirational storytelling, we organize our work around two areas:
- Organizing exhibits and talks, including an annual festival, around impactful visual storytelling.
- Providing resources, grants and training for visual artists to better tell stories important to their communities.
Our signature event is the annual Focus on the Story International Photo Festival, which celebrates the city’s diversity, promotes cultural understanding and strives to make photography accessible to people of all backgrounds. The activities during the month-long celebration of photography include talks, workshops, photo walks, portfolio reviews, gallery exhibitions and outdoor art installations.LEARN MORE
