• Jeunesse Insulaire (Ile de La Réunion)
« Jeunesse Insulaire » est un travail réalisé dans le cadre d’une résidence à Saint-Denis sur l’île de la Réunion en partenariat avec la Cité des Arts. »
En novembre 2016, trois photographes du collectif ITEM, investissent les quartiers du Butor et du Bas de Maréchal Leclerc à Saint-Denis pour une résidence collective de trois semaines initiée par La Cité des arts. Ils entament ainsi un travail photographique cherchant à restituer par l’image et l’interview le quotidien d’une vie de quartier. Leurs investigations s’attachent à réactiver la mémoire de la première voie de circulation qui a traversé la ville d’est en ouest dès la fin du 19ème siècle : La rue du Grand Chemin qui aujourd’hui porte en partie le nom de Rue du Maréchal Leclerc.
Depuis, dix-huit photographes et un créateur sonore se sont succédés dans le cadre de six résidences de création consacrées au territoire de cette voie de circulation historique. Issus essentiellement de La Réunion, de Madagascar, d’Afrique du sud ou de France, ces photographes au parcours professionnels différents ont présentés à l’occasion de l’exposition de ce projet en mai 2019 à La Cité des arts, une photographie actuelle détachée à la fois de l’urgence de l’actualité mais aussi de cadres esthétiques prédéterminés.
Ce sont les traces de l’histoire qui marquent ce territoire urbain qui les ont intéressés mais aussi la façon dont les habitants s’emparent de leur espace pour le vivre. En investissant les quartiers populaires du Bas de Maréchal Leclerc, du Quadrilatère océan, de Jeumont, du Butor, de Sainte-Clotilde ou encore du Chaudron, ils ont cherchés à retranscrire, à rendre visible, les pratiques et les relations humaines qui s’y tissent.
Les séries photographiques développées font ressortir en premier lieu les rencontres humaines et l’intimité d’une photographie du quotidien mais aussi l’importance du contexte qu’il soit urbain ou paysager. Le résultat en image de ces résidences de production a été restitué une première fois en salle d’exposition et sera également présenté in-situ en 2020, directement sur le territoire du Grand Chemin où ces images prennent alors tout leur sens.

In November 2016, three photographers from the ITEM collective, invested the Butor and Bas de Maréchal Leclerc neighbourhoods in Saint-Denis for a three-week collective residency initiated by La Cité des Arts. They are thus beginning a photographic project that seeks to reconstruct, through images and interviews, the daily life of a neighbourhood. Their investigations focused on reactivating the memory of the first road that crossed the city from east to west at the end of the 19th century: the Rue du Grand Chemin, which today is partly called Rue du Maréchal Leclerc.
Since then, eighteen photographers and a sound artist have taken part in six creative residencies devoted to the territory of this historic thoroughfare. Coming mainly from Reunion Island, Madagascar, South Africa or France, these photographers with different professional backgrounds have presented, on the occasion of the exhibition of this project in May 2019 at the Cité des arts, a current photography detached from both the urgency of current events and predetermined aesthetic frames.
They are interested in the traces of history that mark this urban territory, but also in the way the inhabitants take possession of their space in order to live it. By investing the working-class neighbourhoods of Bas de Maréchal Leclerc, Quadrilatère océan, Jeumont, Butor, Sainte-Clotilde and Chaudron, they sought to transcribe and make visible the human practices and relationships that are woven there.
The photographic series they have developed highlight first and foremost human encounters and the intimacy of everyday photography, but also the importance of the context, whether urban or landscape. The results of these production residencies were first shown in an exhibition room and will also be presented in situ in 2020, directly on the territory of the Grand Chemin, where these images will take on their full meaning.
