On October 15, 2020, Jovita Curipoma and her husband Juan Angamarca - both seniors - along with Salomón Tene and Jhon Morocho were arrested at their homes. The four community leaders of the parish of Gualel in the province of Loja and members of the Committee for the Defense of Water and the Páramos in the area were accused of an alleged flagrant crime for the attack, resistance, and damage to the property of others after a vehicle of the Guayacan Gold mining company was set on fire in a confrontation between community members and mining company personnel. During the arrests, one of the leaders was attacked by a Guayacan Gold worker.

Tensions between the Gualel community members and the mining companies began several years ago after the state granted around 28,000 mining concessions in the Fierro Urco mountain range - shared by the Loja and El Oro provinces. There is the Estrella Hídrica, where the most important rivers of the southern region are born: Guayabal, Santiago, Tenta, Ambocas, San Luis, and the sub-basins of the Catamayo, Santiago, Jubonoes, and Puyango river.

To express their concerns, on the morning of June 21, 2021, the community members led a peaceful march from Gualel to the city of Loja. It was a 91km walk The march went through the different parishes affected by the mining project

After two days of walking, on June 22 they arrived in the city of Loja, and in the center of the city on the outskirts of the Loja Government they installed a vigil. Meeting there they asked Governor Mario Mansino to organize a hearing to hear their demands. Some of them were: the cessation of the judicialization processes of the 14 members of the committee for the defense of water and the páramos - known as "the 14 of Gualel" -, promoting a constitutional protection action against mining prospecting actions in the páramos of Fierro Urco, and compliance with the Loja canton resolution free of metal mining that was signed on August 27, 2019. In addition, they requested the total exit of the mining companies that are in the area.

Now, the defendants are known as "the 14 from Gualel" are awaiting a preparatory hearing for their trial.
