Five-year-old Fariba sits in the lap of her mother, Fatemeh, in her family’s makeshift tent on the outskirts of Herat. They fled war and drought in Badghis after a man who loaned them money demanded Fariba marry his son. "If I could give back the man's money,” Fatemeh says, “I would keep my daughter next to me."

Seventeen-year-old Arefe poses for a portrait in her home in Bamiyan, Afghanistan. When the drought hit, her father, a potato farmer, couldn’t afford to keep her in school. "I wanted to become a doctor and go to Australia,” says Arefe. Even though it’s unlikely she’ll be able to return to school, Arefe hasn’t lost hope. “I have not given up on my dreams,” she says. When she’s not helping in the field, she plays soccer with local girls.

As the US ponders its future involvement in Afghanistan, we underestimate climate change as one major threat that will cause increased regional instability and conflict. The country tied up in a crossroads of conflict, and now climate change imperils progress and peace in this fragile country.
Afghanistan climate change story that Sophia Jones and I worked on together is live now on National Geographic! No words can express what this project means to me. Through the work, I have had the privilege to meet many incredible people, inspirational and courageous mothers, female students, and farmers in Afghanistan. However, the Climate crisis and its devastating consequences fuel mass migration, child marriage, and conflict that affect women and girls in particular.
