Naija, you dey kolo

(Nigeria, you are crazy) The photo series travels to Abuja to find images resonating like memories between the urban centre that isn't and the village that was.

Background story:

Abuja, Nigeria’s capital since 1991, was created from a desire to design a centrally located federal capital that would be a force for national unity, and is also a result of Nigeria’s sudden wealth by oil. The city, whose slogan was to become Center of Unity since Abuja lies in the geographical middle of Nigeria, was mainly built in the1980 at a location ‘in the middle of nowhere’. However, Abuja is one of the fastest growing cities in the world since the concentration of political power, business and wealth naturally attracts large number of migrants. Abuja is said to be expensive and boring, although it is praised for cleanliness and safety. The city is sprawling massively into the countryside, satellite towns are emerging and settlements are being developed. Despite those developments and the rapid growth, and although Abuja has the name of being the ‘big-men’s city’, Nigerians argue fiercely if not the real centre of the country is the vibrating megacity of Lagos, its most important commercial centre and cultural hub.
