Chile is the world's second-largest lithium producer after Australia and has one of the largest lithium reserves in the world. The leading national production happens in the Atacama desert, one of the driest places on Earth, where the highest surface UV irradiance may occur. SQM and Albemarle are the mining companies operating in the Atacama salt flat that produced 40,000 tonnes of lithium in 2022.
The Atacameños community are the inhabitants of this area, whose antecedents can be traced back at least 1500 years, and now must live together with these mining activities that claim future progress. The towns where they live are in the eternal duality of the economic benefits of the mining industry and the potential adverse environmental effects of extractivism in the area, such as water extraction, which later affects ground quality and temperature, directly impacting agriculture activities.
