Rolls+Tubes Project Description
With the Bay Area’s shelter-in-place plan going into full effect on March 19th, our planned critique group meeting shifted from in-person to online once we all wrangled our lives into some semblance of order. Thinking about the seriousness of the moment combined with the surreal quality of what was occurring around us, we thought that we should make images to occupy our time and give us something to work on while in our homes. Toilet paper became our muse because of its sudden shift to precious commodity and the history of photography was our theme since each one of us has a vested interest in that narrative. It's definitely not a serious project, however we all need a moment of play and humor, especially now. The notion of "making do" and working with what you have on hand is also really critical as well. The title of the project, Rolls and Tubes, references a canonical 1978 photography exhibition entitled, “Mirrors and Windows.”
