Main Street Farms harvests a wide range of organic vegatables throughout the year. Their newest crop, hemp, has created a demand that they are now starting to realize will require more teamwork across a diverse group of business and consumers to make the company grow.
The air is starting to warm up, condensation collects on the windows of the farm office. Through the cloudy windows Allan can see the headlights of a car pulling into the driveway, his harvest manager just arrived to work.
Allan Gandelman, one of the founders of Head and Heal, is always the first one in the farm office. He has a short walk to work, he lives in a farmhouse just a few hundred feet from where he works. This valuable quiet time is used to look over what is being harvested, who is harvesting and what equipment needs to be repaired. Allan enjoys the first of many cups of coffee during this ritual.
The mornings at Head and Heal start before first light with quiet fields and cold air. Farm staff are nowhere to be seen yet — the crows flying overhead are the only evidence that the world is starting to wake up.
As the sun peaks over the eastern hills of the farm, Allan makes his way to one of the farm’s high tunnels where hemp is dried on location. Still too dark to see with the naked eye, Allan uses his iPhone light to illuminate and inspect the drying leaves of a hemp plant. He remarks about the aroma of the drying plant. It’s pungent and floral, qualities that lead Allan to smile about the state of his crop.

Mike Stoker (left) and Donald Thompson work together to quickly hang recently harvested hemp in one of Head and Heal’s drying warehouses. Drying the hemp is the last but longest step before the plant is pulled apart and turned into CDB oil. The oil is used by customers as a homeopathic remedy to treat everything from arthritis to anxiety.
Cannabis is harvested at Main Street Farms in Cortland, NY not for its THC but for the healing power of its cannabidiol, a naturally occurring non-hallucinogenic compound extracted for a range of therapeutic uses. These images follow Allan Gandelman and his crew through a day of hemp harvest and preparation.
