After encountering Theda Sandiford at the Future is Female art exhibit in September 2021, her passionate speech about her artwork left a lasting impression on me, prompting a desire to engage in a one-on-one conversation with her. On October 6, 2021, we conducted an interview via teleconference to delve deeper into her artistic journey and perspectives. Theda Sandiford introduced herself as an artist with a keen interest in mixed media and a lifelong inclination towards collecting various objects. She shared how seemingly insignificant items, such as shells or lost earrings, held a special significance for her, becoming cherished treasures and sources of inspiration for her work. Sandiford's artistic endeavors revolve around the theme of memories and their recontextualization. She aims to convey the emotions and stories associated with her personal experiences, both positive and negative, through her artwork. Her creations often possess a healing and cathartic effect, inviting viewers to reflect and release their own emotions. Interestingly, Sandiford mentioned her newfound fascination with shopping carts, which she now encounters everywhere, thanks to her artistic exploration. She humorously expressed the need for assistance in finding homes for these unexpected artistic materials. When discussing the connection between her work and the social and political issues of 2020 and the present, Sandiford emphasized the inherently political nature of her art. As a black female artist, she believes that taking a stand and giving a voice to the marginalized is inherently political. Her work aims to shed light on the experiences that black women, and people of color in general, often face, experiences that are sometimes dismissed or invalidated.

Theda’s family, particularly the women, have had a strong influence on her art, teaching her valuable skills such as sewing, knitting, and patternmaking. She also draws inspiration from other artists such as Nick Cave, Robert Rauschenberg, and Basquiat. In navigating the art world post-COVID, the artist emphasizes the importance of digital presentation skills and utilizing apps to enhance one's work. She notes that the world has become bigger but uncertain in terms of where it's going.  Despite the challenges, the artist has achieved gallery representation after working towards it for 20 years and encourages others to explore their own artistic potential as it can deepen their understanding of others' emotions.
