Summary
Log booms allow timber companies to move felled timber by water to the mills where it will be processed for sale & export. The lumber industry is big business in BC; the top 3 forestry companies had $6.5 billion in income in Q1 of 2022. Trees photosynthesize - taking in carbon dioxide from the air & releasing oxygen.

As such, they provide efficient carbon capture solutions, able to counteract increases in CO2 and other pollutants that impact the global climate. In the current economic paradigm the monetary value of trees is considered higher when they are cut down than when they are standing.
