Whaling captain Reppi Swan prepares his sled with his son, Sakkan, on April 14, 2017 in Kivalina, Alaska before heading out of town by snowmachine in search of safe open water. Kivalina was once a prominent whaling village, but the village hasn't caught a bowhead whale since 1994. Some in the village say that a whale hasn't been caught because several whaling captains fought over the last whale. Many say that it's just harder to catch the whale now because the ice is thinner and less predictable with more ledes. Reppi says he believes that both reasons are valid.
