The Alexia promotes the power of visual storytelling to shed light on significant issues around the world by supporting photographers, filmmakers and other visual creatives whose work fosters cultural understanding and inspires change.
Over 30 years, more than $1.7 million in grants has gone to 170 student and professional photographers through the program’s annual competitions. At a time when many other resources have dwindled, The Alexia continues to support documentary photography and filmmaking on academic and professional levels.
Two grants are offered: The Alexia professional grant and The Alexia student grant.
Grants are awarded to applicants who produce significant projects that share in The Alexia’s mission and who demonstrate the ability to accomplish their projects. Applicants must submit a synopsis of their project, a proposal, a bio, a résumé/CV, and a body of work consisting of up to 20 photographs or 2 films. Entries are judged as much on the strength of the written proposal as on the applicant’s visual skills. What storytellers address and what they say about life on the planet is more important than the genre chosen to address that topic.
These grants enable current college student photographers to produce bodies of work that share The Alexia’s goals of promoting world peace and cultural understanding. We encourage a diversity of creators, issues and approaches, and value work that elevates understanding and inspires meaningful change.
Student applicants are encouraged to consider proposing projects located close to where they live because a successful body of work is more likely with easy and repeated access. Most student grant recipients are already working on their projects when they apply. The student grant application is free.
Student recipients receive a fellowship for tuition and fees to enroll in three courses during a semester at the Newhouse School at Syracuse University in New York. They also receive a $1,000 stipend and serve as the research assistant (a paid position) to The Alexia chair.
Professional grants enable established photographers and filmmakers to produce substantial bodies of work that share The Alexia’s goals of promoting world peace and cultural understanding. The Alexia encourages a diversity of creators, issues and approaches, and values work that elevates understanding and inspires meaningful change. The professional grant application has a $50 fee.
Professional recipients receive $20,000 in funding.
