Anahí Cadena, 11 years old, does her homework at home with the company of her mothers and her older sister. They recharge $ 5.00 a week to download their assignments and classes on WhatsApp. Quito, Ecuador. Johis Alarcón María Cecilia Guanoluisa is a single mother of three school-age children. She came from the countryside to the city to work as a bricklayer and farmer Since the quarantine began, María and her children live in the construction where she worked. Anahí, 11-year-old is in the 6th year of the primary, she is the youngest of the daughters her brother and sister help her with the homework because her mom never finished school. Since the pandemic this family has to work as informal sellers, the profits are invested in weekly internet recharges to download classes and homework. Anahí Cadena, 11 años de edad, realiza sus tareas en casa con la compañía de su madres y su hermana mayor. Hacen recargas de $5,00 a la semana para descargar sus tareas y clases por WhatsApp. Quito-Ecuador. Johis Alarcón María Cecilia Guanoluisa es madre soltera de tres hijos en edad escolar. Ella vino del campo a la ciudad hace varios años para trabajar como albañil y agricultora, ella nunca terminó la escuela. Desde que empezó la cuarentena, María y sus hijos viven en la construcción donde ella trabajaba. Anahí de 11 años, la menor de las hijas está en 6to año hace sus deberes al cuidado de sus hermanos. Para sobrevivir la pandemia, esta familia se dedica a la venta informal y las ganancias se invierten en recargas semanales de internet para descargar las clases y deberes.

EDUCATION THROUGH WHATSAPP

Education through WhatsApp is a collective photography project by Fluxus Foto that aims to make visible the increasing social inequalities regarding access to education in elementary school in Ecuador, its consequences and responses during the COVID 19 emergency. Public education is one of the most afected sectors in Ecuador the government reduces the basic salary for teachers who try to teach from a virtual educational system in a country where only 6 out of 10 children have access to the internet. This project covers the story of children and public school teachers who face education from home amid an economic crisis. Unemployed parents and most of them illiterates do their best to get the internet and cell phones that allow them to continue with the education of their children, who live their childhood in quarantine. Teachers invest their own money to connect with their students and double their days fullling their roles at home and teaching with videos, phone calls or messages through WhatsApp.
