At the Colorado State University Extension research farm in Orchard Mesa, Colorado, the crops used to go unharvested. But then Amanda McQuade came along, marshaling a small army of interns and volunteers to harvest and distribute the produce to food banks around the region. Now the farm not only adds fresh fruits and vegetables to thousands of meals, but the program has also opened the opportunity for school children from around Grand Junction to visit the farm and connect more deeply with their food.
