ANTARCTICA
Antarctica, in popular imagination, exists nearly as a mythical place. Cold, distant, inhospitable, and separated from the rest of the world by notoriously tumultuous oceans, it is a place where no humans have ever permanently lived. Today, it remains one of the most pristine wilderness areas on earth, and an increasingly popular destination for tourists.
Throughout seven seasons as a expedition guide, zodiac driver and photography lecturer in the Polar Regions, I have made over 25 expeditions to Antarctica, South Georgia and the Falkland Islands.
This is a small selection of images from my experiences as a guide - meant to celebrate the astounding beauty and richness of these regions, but also to explore the idea of human presence in Antarctica. Who are the people who "live" seasonally in Antarctica, and how do we as visitors interact with these spaces? How do humans establish relationships with such a wild place, and what role can these relationships play in shaping the future of Antarctica?
