Theatre of Broken Memories
December 9, 2022 – March 5, 2023

Bebe Blanco Agterberg’s Theatre of Broken Memories, presented by Foam 3h from December 9, 2022 – March 5, 2023, explores the silencing, fragmentation, and changing of collective memory in Spain after the Franco Dictatorship. Agterberg’s project emerged from a personal search for her mother’s family history. After discovering no leads, she began to uncover other hidden stories covered up after the Franco Regime.

Theatre of Broken Memories explores the ways memory changes on a national scale when history is silenced. At the core of the project, Agterberg’s work investigates the “Pact of Forgetting,” an agreement developed to silence and move forward from the dictatorship’s brutal history. As a result, the missing were not searched for, and crimes were not prosecuted. Throughout the exhibition, Agterberg challenges the viewer to ask questions. In a video about her project, Agterberg states, “I wanted to challenge the viewer not to look at aesthetically pretty images, but to critically listen to what you see and if you can decipher …the actual story. If I show you a picture, do you immediately believe that this picture is true? Am I a good source? Am I trustworthy? These are very important questions for everybody that is looking at images in the newspaper or anywhere else. To constantly keep on asking themselves these questions.”

Agterberg’s is the sixth recipient of the Florentine Riem Vis Grant.
