The Child Jesus of Xochimilco, Niñopa or Niñopan, was created some 430 years ago in the San Bernardino Monastery. Unlike many church relics, Niñopa is placed in the possession of the community instead of being kept secured in a Church facility.
Each year a new family, or Mayordomo, is selected to take custody of the Image and sponsor various events throughout the year. Despite the demands of being a Mayordomo, some families have waited as long as 50 years to have the honor of taking custody of the image. On February 2nd of every year, the Niñopa exchanges hands and find his way into a new home with the blessing of the Church.
