 International Garden – Juan Páez
International Garden. Hannover Germany 2018. Juan Páez.
Sahlkamp is a neighborhood north of Hanover Germany, considered a place where people with different social problems live. It concentrates an immigrant population that are mostly from Turkey, Iran, Russia, Greece, Bulgaria, Africa. A sectorized wave of violence linked to drug micro-trafficking is on alert to all the control agencies of the city.
There are around 5,000 people who are mostly Germans, but socially complex. On the threshold that is considered this sector covers what for the German government is poverty for me is a new way of subsistence outside the countries where many of these people come. Among refugees, immigrants and Germans there is a colorful and diverse environment that Germany considers a suburb and associates it with extreme poverty.
My portraits seek to illustrate the situation in which they live. Although many must work tirelessly week after week, some others because of their language limitations must make a living with small jobs.
In the middle of Sahlkamp is the International Garden, a space for the inhabitants of the suburb, where each one sows what tradition of his mother earth, and replicates it among his friends from other countries.
