In Mexico schools have kept closed for over a year, which has led to the number of children not participating in classes increasing by 74 percent. Hardest hit are the ones without access to internet, television or mobile phones. As the country is preparing for a gradual reopening of schools, they are likely the ones who have fallen most behind.

According to the UN, almost 500 million children have been excluded from the remote learning solutions replacing their normal schooling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. For many children in rural villages it has been impossible to take part in any classes, and parents who often had only a few years in school themselves have a hard time helping them.

We have followed several teachers in indigenous communities in the Mexican state of Yucatán who have sought creative solutions to the situation, such as visiting students by motorcycle-taxi every two weeks and making their own teaching materials for bilingual children who are used to speaking only Maya at home.
