I am a Dutch (1983) freelance photojournalist / documentary photographer based between London and Stockholm. Through my work as a photojournalist I aim to show what life is like for vulnerable individuals or groups affected by extreme poverty or conflict. With my personal work, I am exploring the relationships between people and their direct environment. The impacts they both harbour on each other whether this is through troubling socio-political times or under economical and environmental distress.
I have a background in law and graduated in 2012 with an MA in Commercial and Corporate Law from Maastricht University, Netherlands. During the autumn of 2013 I worked at ‘NOOR ’ collective based in Amsterdam, which further intensified my interest for visual storytelling.
In 2014, I graduated from the MA Photojournalism and Documentary Photography course at the London College of Communication, led by Paul Lowe, Max Houghton and Edmund Clark. Under their supervision I completed my graduation project ’The Nail That Sticks Up Will Be Hammered Down ’ on the paradox between individualism and collectivism in contemporary Japan. This project has since been exhibited at The Museum for Contemporary Art in Rome (2015).
GUP selected me in 2014 as belonging to the best 100 emerging Dutch photographers of that year and my work appeared in their book NEW Dutch Photography Talent 2014. Since then I have been published in various international online and print media, among others; CNN, El Pais, Days Japan, Marie Claire UK, de Volkskrant, The Daily Telegraph and the Swedish daily Svenska Dagbladet.
I have experience working on a large variety of topics and circumstances; from human interest stories to socioeconomic/sociopolitical orientated and archival based work, but always look to maintain an emphasis on the human aspect of the story. Since I began my career in photography in 2014, I produced work in Romania, Ukraine, Mozambique, Japan, Turkey, Iraq and my adopted home country, Sweden.
During 2018 I started working with moving imagery, which I intend to integrate seamlessly into my documentary storytelling.
I am available for commissioned work in Sweden and abroad.
