Investments in the fight against AIDS "“ channelled through governments and programs such as The Global Fund and the U.S. President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) "“ have helped save millions of lives and started to bend the curve of the pandemic. Today 20.9 million people are on life-saving antiretroviral treatment, up from just 685,000 in 2000.
Despite the millions of dollars poured into prevention and treatment programs in Africa, many continue to make irresponsible choices. One nurse in Liberia grabbed a peace of paper and gave it to her patient"Princess, an HIV postive soon-to-be mother who had defaulted on her antiretroviral medication. On the paper she had written "death" and "life." She looked a Princess and commanded, "Pick one." The same could be said to millions across Africa who are provided with free medication or prevention methods.
This series of photographs are selects from stories of the fight to end the HIV epidemic across Africa that Morgana has documented over the last decade as she's travelled across the continent.
