This demonstration of 100+ people took place in Bloomington, Indiana, shortly after the murder of Trayvon Martin in Florida. Trayvon, barely 17, armed only with a can of iced tea and a package of Skittles and walking home alone on a rainy evening, was pursued by a self-appointed neighborhood watchman who profiled him as a probable burglar. At the demonstration, I found I was the only photographer there--no one from the local media came, which was surprising in a liberal college town and so was probably happenstance. Being the only one, I wanted to document this event as well as I could. The participants (among whom I counted myself) obviously welcomed my efforts. This demonstration reflected an important, even defining, event and public sentiments that must not be forgotten.
