"May Ahura Mazda save this country from the enemy, drought, and lies".
Darius the Great, King of Persia (Iran) 521-486 B.C
According to the texts and scientific researchers, Iran palate started facing Dehydration in its central part, where today is the political borders of Iran. Iran is one of the driest countries and with the mismanaging of water sources in Iran, it is getting more drier, losing its lakes, ponds, Qanat, and other forms of water sources. with a high speed. in Iran, after the Islamic revolution of 1979, a Construction Jihad created as one of the Organizations of the Iranian Revolution. The organization began as a movement of volunteers to help with the 1979 harvest, but soon took on a broader, more official role in the countryside. It was involved with road building, piped water, electrification, clinics, schools, and irrigation canals. It also provides "extension services, seeds, loans," etc. to small farmers. one of the aspects of the Construction Jihad was digging the earth to make water wells. due to the extra extraction of water from water sources either the water sources got dried up or mixed with salty water. therefore a lot of people had to abandon farming and it speeded the process of desertification.
Shahrabd is one of the villages of Qazvin province in Iran with almost 1000 population. Shahrabd by word means the green village was decades ago a rich green village. In recent decades use of water engine for extraction of water has been decreased as a result of the volume of water storage sharply decreased. meanwhile, climate changes in Iran and subsequently in Shahrabd caused reduction of rainfall in the natural seasons, fall and winter and instead downfall of rain and sometimes snow in spring causes the destruction of agricultural fields. In this situation, a lot of farmers had to abandon their farms and find other sources of income like animal husbandry or immigrate to cities for better job opportunities.
in this regard, Jafar who is a 45-year-old farmer and used to work on the farmlands of his late father says: " I remember it was about 25 years ago while I, my father and my other brothers were standing against a wall, basking in the sunlight, my father said: it's such a pleasant winter, its not as cold as it used to be, I wish it would be always like this... and from that winter I remember every time there was less and lesser rain and snow..."although he complains against the corruption in related organizations towards farmers affairs. he says that some people have connections there and can access to water sources, but not all. he continues that there are some illegal water pumps in the village that they are extracting the water and use it for their farming. Jafar says: “it’s not that we think water is not available. Water always exist. But the government and corrupted staff don’t allow us to receive injustice. Some other farmers have a connection and can get water but we are alone. Nobody cares about us.”
the problem is not just the injustice in receiving the water but those who have the connection, work on the farms of other farmers without permission. jafar believes that no one can do anything claim hey should do it as much as possible not to let farms go wasted without farming. his farm which is his father's inheritance been taken by some residents of the village without his permission and they are working on that. " we have asked them few times not to enter our farms but they don't care. we cant insist more as it will lead to a fight and we don't want that. there is no justice to support us, they have the power." Jafar says.
