Hospitallers is a volunteer battalion of paramedics, assisting the Ukrainian army on the frontline of Ukraine's centuries-long war with Russia. To most Americans, it seems incomprehensible that volunteers are needed to do simple tasks such as applying a tourniquet to an injured soldier and then evacuating them from danger to a hospital. But this is the reality in 2021 Ukraine. With one week of training, a man like Oleh, a graphic designer in everyday life, goes on a 2-week rotation - willing to run into danger, give first aid, and load an injured soldier into a 25-year-old truck, and drive through the darkness to safety. What the Ukrainian military fails to provide, volunteers come to do the job.
