Dachau served as a prototype and model for the other German concentration camps that followed. The Dachau complex included the prisoner camp, and the much larger SS training school compound with barracks, factories, and other facilities.

When the Dachau concentration camp was expanded, the SS had a complex of 34 barracks built in 1937/38. The complex was demolished in 1964/65. Two buildings at the beginning of the former camp road (one in the picture) are replicas from 1965.

Dachau's proximity to Munich, where Hitler came to power, made it a convenient location. From 1933 to 1938, the prisoners were mainly German citizens imprisoned for political reasons. After the Reichspogromnacht or Kristallnacht, more than 10,000 male Jewish citizens were interned by them in Dachau.

In 1937, construction work began on the larger planned new prisoner compound. New barracks were erected. The new compound measured 583 meters × 278 meters.

The former New Crematorium with Gas Chamber, called "Barrack X", was built in 1942. It contained a crematorium with four incinerators, disinfection chambers for clothing, recreation and sanitary rooms as well as death chambers and a gas chamber disguised as a "shower bath".

The Jewish memorial (1967), designed by Zvi Guttmann, leads down a ramp to commemorate the annihilation of European Jewry. A seven-branched candelabrum (menorah) is located at the top of the building.

The Protestant Church in Germany realised the Protestant Church of Reconciliation as a central memorial church for all victims of National Socialism. The commissioned architect was Helmut Striffler.

Fear of Death Christian Chapel

The chapel, designed by architect Josef Wiedemann, stands for the memory of the fear of death and the suffering of the prisoners. Above the entrance, a crown of thorns made of iron.

The herb garden was part of the Dachau concentration camp, as an experimental facility for the use of herbal substances and organic-dynamic agriculture.

Concentration camp prisoners worked in the herb garden as labour slaves. The site was used to supply the Eastern Front with vitamin C and active plant substances and was thus a building block for the planned war of aggression. The former administration and institute building as well as relics of three greenhouses with adjoining head buildings have been preserved.

Hebertshausen Shooting Range

The Hebertshausen shooting range was built in 1937/38 as part of the Dachau concentration camp. In 1941 and 1942, the SS murdered more than 4,000 Soviet prisoners of war here. The SS forced the soldiers to undress and line up in rows of five in the right-hand firing lane in front of the bullet trap. Then they were herded into the left-hand firing lane, handcuffed to stakes and shot.

On the former "Street of the SS", today "Street of the Concentration Camp Victims", there was a row of SS villas. They currently house offices of the Bavarian riot police.

In addition to opponents of the regime, more and more people are imprisoned for racial ideological and "socio-hygienic" reasons. These include sexual and ethnic minorities such as homosexuals and Sinti and Roma. People who have repeatedly committed crimes or lead an unadjusted lifestyle are also persecuted as "criminal" and "asocial" and taken into concentration camp custody. From 1940 onwards, more and more prisoners from countries occupied by the Wehrmacht are sent to Dachau concentration camp. The number of prisoners rises to about 10,000.

In 1944, the defeat of the Wehrmacht becomes apparent. The Red Army and the Western Allies advance towards the Reich's borders. At the Dachau main camp, "evacuation transports" from concentration camps near the front, which had been disbanded by the SS, continually arrive. Dachau concentration camp is overcrowded with more than 30,000 prisoners.

On 29 April 1945, units of the US Army liberate the Dachau concentration camp. For thousands of prisoners, the rescue comes too late - they die of exhaustion, disease and the consequences of concentration camp imprisonment.
