About

Zara Katz is an independent photo editor and filmmaker for editorial, documentary and branded content. She directs, produces, shoots and develops projects from short films to photo essays. Collaboration is key to her work, from supporting photo and video journalists in the field, to editing visual portfolios, to working directly with reporters and organization to deliver unique original content. She is the co-creator of @EverydayIncarceration, a collaborative Instagram feed looking at 40 years of mass incarceration in the United States, which has been supported by The Magnum Foundation and Brown Center for Media Innovation and has been exhibited at Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia and Photoville in New York.

Katz has worked at The New York Times Lens blog, Time magazine and Newsweek and been on staff at the digital publication Narratively and the journalism nonprofit started by Barbara Ehrenreich, Economic Hardship Reporting Project. She is the co-founder of Hot in Here Productions, a team that creates documentary-driven content for editorial and branded projects. After receiving her Master’s degree at CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, she continued working at the university as adjunct faculty and special photojournalism projects manager. She brings experience working with print and digital images and videos in editorial publications, branded campaigns, non-profit content, social media, academic platforms and live panels, as well as museum and galleries where she began her career in photography.
