My mom in the Venice Ale House. She drew the necklace she's wearing. That's my brother and I as kids. She wore that necklace all day, and a cashier later recognized it as my brother and I. Venice Beach, December 2016.
My dad keeps a copy of the United States Constitution with his bullets in his gun safe, where he stores all of his firearms, all loaded. Benton City, 2017.
A sprinkler creates a rainbow in the mist as it waters my mom's garden. She's inconsistent about planting; sometimes starting late in the season, and almost never keeping it properly weeded. Benton City, July 2017
The train running eastbound as the sun goes down. When my parents first bought the house, the train ran across tracks at the end of their property, but a few years later, it was moved across the river. In the foreground, the pasture where the neighbor runs his cows. Benton City, July 2017.
My brother, in a rare moment, not scowling at me as I take his photo. He went into my dad's garage to take a phone call from work, and presumably, get away from my camera for a minute. It didn't work, and I followed him inside. As he came out, I asked him to stand in the doorway for a minute so I could take this. Benton City, May 2016.
The dining room table is always covered with things. We hardly ate there growing up. At one point, my mom built a tennis table platform to fit over the top, and that was just covered with things, too. My dad hates clutter, but my mom can't help it. A note reads "Dylan was bored. Went to movie." My dad left it for my mom sometime in May 2016. Benton City, May 2016.
The shelves at our house are full of whosits and whatsits, and family photos. We haven't taken a true family portrait in probably 15 years now. On this shelf are a glazed pottery bowl I made in grade school art class, my parents' portrait, a jar of candy, some rocks and crystals, a glass globe paperweight, and, strangest of all, a preserved alligator head. Benton City, May 2016.
One of the likely places to find my dad in the house: in front of the desktop computer. He just came in from his shop, which explains the holey jeans. Behind him is a wall of photos featuring me at various stages (left) and my brother (right). My mom always regretted having more photos of me than my brother. In the center is a still life my mom painted for her painting classes. On the credenza is a makeshift bed for the cat (left) and an unused large format Canon printer (right). Benton City, May 2016.
Like father, like son. My brother will take Dad's seat often. That's a dragon tattoo snaking down his arm on the left, and a Lord of the Rings replica ring on his hand. Everyone in my family wears glasses. Benton City, May 2016.
When I visit home, we go wine tasting. There are hundreds of wineries within 30 minutes of our house, so it's a fun thing to do. This was my brother's first time tasting, and he gulped each one ounce pour down like a shot of whisky. Prosser, May 2016.
Mom walks her cart back to the Ki-Be Market. The market, right across from the high school, is where a lot of my high school classmates and friends worked through school. Lots of us would get lunch over there since it was walking distance. It's the closest grocery store to our house, so any last-minute milk or beer purchases were made here. I photographed my mom in the store too, and she told me a man came up to her and told her "someone was photographing her." She thought that was funny. Benton City, May 2016.
Mom and Dad pose for a portrait as we prepare for dinner. Dad cooked burgers on the grill in his underwear, and Mom snuck bites to the dogs under the table. I'm not sure if Mom is holding onto the Corona in her hand tighter than she is my dad. Benton City, May 2016.
My brother's hammer of Thor tattoo as his hand directs the steering wheel of his Chevy Impala. He's driving me to the airport. You can see my shadow on his arm on the left. Benton City, May 2016.
