"Natural Wonders: The Poetics of Everyday Life in Chicago and Beyond" is about beauty beyond it's predictable boundaries. It's a platform that enables the subject to come as they are. At this time, all of the subjects reside in the Chicagoland area, and all are people within my social sphere. My plan is to expand the project throughout the Upper Midwest and the South over the next several years. The photos are all shot on color 120mm film with Brownie #2 camera. In the future I'll continue using these, as well as 35mm color film.
"Natural Wonders: The Poetics of Everyday Life in Chicago and Beyond"
This project is a family portrait, my extended family, a life I've made for myself since moving to Chicago from Minneapolis in 2011. Craving kindred spirits, diversity, and creativity, I sought out other artists and musicians with whom I could share a bond. All of the subjects are friends of mine. They are performance artists, sex workers, burlesque dancers, shopkeepers, mystics, musicians, painters, and bicycle advocates, to name just few things. Many identify as queer and some are polyamorous.
This project is also a collaboration. I see my part as providing a platform for the subject's creative energy to emerge fully. Most of my subjects are people who often feel marginalized and treated as aberrations. I see them as alluring and exquisite beings who's contributions and light are beyond necessary in todays sociopolitical climate.
On another level, it's an analog exploration of identity and psyche, using light, color, temperature, costume, and mystic materials to illuminate and secure the wild creature within the tamed.
All the images were shot on a Brownie no.2 Camera using Kodak Ekatchrome E100S slide film.
