About

Named for the fourth Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court (1801-1835), John Marshall Mantel is an editorial and commercial photographer. He was educated at a New Jersey prep school, but spent as much time as possible in Manhattan, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art or Washington Square Park, shooting pictures with his father's Canon AE-1. John studied theatre and photography at California Institute of the Arts, and got his first assignment from Fred McDarrah at The Village Voice. He has presented his work to students at Columbia University, New York University, the International Center of Photography (ICP), and the NY PhotoGroup Salon at Soho Photo Gallery.
