J.Genevieve is an artist first, photographer second, raw and emerging human-woman-and-then-some always. Her soul gaze has always been drawn to the heart and true nature of things, in particular the disruptive beauty of the real of it; life unfolding in the moment, layers of creative process, the textured mystique of mundane moments, unfiltered emotion, wild forms & honest souls. As a seer, she observes versus directs, intuitively merging social documentary and abstract aesthetics. This approach, which is highly intuitive and process oriented, shapes both her photographic work and ongoing exploration of other mediums. J.Genevieve creates best within a space of being, showcasing humanity in their various elements, and believes that liberation from performative appearances is needed, now more than ever, within the visual conversation.
LONG BIO:
When Jess was 17, she instinctually picked up a camera to document a moment between her father & grandfather. She hasn't strayed far from that tool since. Over the past 20+ years she taught herself everything she knows about her craft, honing her perspective through nation and world wide travels, on the floor with two children under two, asking endless questions while shooting alongside or shooting around other photographers, amongst the rigors of military life and within the daily rhythms of life, business and art in small town Texas. Even when discouraged from pursuing a conventional career path within the arts [or a career in general] photography remained a thread of hope, possibility, provision and protection as well as a means of dissent and liberation.
Jess launched J.Genevieve - her brand and artist persona - in mid 2019. As so many did in 2020, she quickly found herself pivoting a brand new business and adapting as a working artist in ways she could have never seen coming. This pressure turned out to be an incubator of introspection and continued healing that she needed to fully align with her calling and purpose regarding J.Genevieve. Underneath it all, the long game for J.Genevieve is to cultivate a creative ecosystem that offers support and access and equitable space for expansion to liberate and empower individuals, particularly those who have faced or who are facing ongoing abuses of power - individually or collectively.
Currently [and always], she is proud to be an artist first, photographer second, raw and emerging human always. She irrevocably trusts her soul gaze, which is drawn to the heart and true nature of things, in particular the disruptive beauty of the real of it; life unfolding in the moment, layers of creative process, the textured mystique of mundane moments, unfiltered emotion, wild forms & honest souls. As a seer, she observes versus directs, intuitively merging social documentary and abstract aesthetics. This approach, which is highly intuitive and process oriented, shapes both her photographic work and ongoing exploration of other mediums.
