Závora is a small fishing village about 6 hours north of Maputo in southern Mozambique. The international conservation organization, Rare, is just starting their Fish Forever work and related campaign here and in 5 other sites in Mozambique. In addition to documenting their daily lives in general and some fisheries issues specifically, I also ran a participatory photography program with four individuals from Závora that was designed not only to empower the participants through visual communication, but also to actively engage the community in conservation-related conversations and as a way for Rare's staff and partners to better understand the community and their values and motivations from their own perspectives.
