The Story: One year ago, NY based NGO Digital Democracy traveled to Haiti to lead photo trainings with Haitian grassroots women who are victims of gender-based violence. Over the last year, these women documented their lives and realities with donated cameras and took thousands of photos.
The Product: “Jan Nou We L/The Way We See It,” curated by Erin Kornfeld and Erica Leone, is a powerful collection of 47 original photographs capturing the women's post-earthquake reality: tarpaulin shelters, makeshift bathrooms and kitchens. In short, a world with few doors to lock and no private space. Because the photographers were "of" the community, the photos are uniquely authentic and honest.
The Collection: The collection just had its first showing in New York City on April 28, 2011 at SplashLight Studios. The event was attended by hundreds and 100% of the proceeds from the auction of prints and ticket sales will now go to the Haitian women's groups who took the photos, and the continued work of Digital Democracy’s photography program in Haiti. Two of the women photogrpahers (leaders of the largest grassroots women's group in Haiti) were in attendance. Limited edition prints and a catalogue of the photos are now available for purchase.
