South Sudan has been ravaged by years of conflict, yet its people remain determined to present themselves as "looking smart." Throughout my work with humanitarian organizations in the country since 2015, I have been struck by the resilience and style of the people I have encountered. However, the conflict has fostered an environment of suspicion, leading to a ban on street photography and heightened scrutiny from both government officials and ordinary citizens. Anyone caught with a camera in public risks questioning, detention, or even arrest.
