The main reason why Gender Based Violence is so spread in Nepal, is the firm conviction that man is more important than woman. This is more than ever evident if we look at their different roles in the society. Females are often relegated to the domestic sphere which often hinders them from following their dreams, or even simply have a basic education. Men instead, are in total control of their life, as well as of properties and finances. These norms are used as justification of violence against women, especially if wives do not obey to husbands orders.
In order to fight this social problem, the Government of Nepal has carried out some positive initiatives. It has established a dedicated funds in order to provide immediate support to GBV survivors. The National Women Commission in collaboration with several NGO developed the Gender Based Violence Information Managment System (GBVIMS), with the aim of standardizing data collection, creating an organized archive for the GBV cases analysis. More "Safe House" have been set up in order to help the women victim of violence to overcome their traumas through a rehab process in a safe environment. Have been created OCMC (One-stop Crisis Medical Centre) at District level in order to provide quality health sevices including psychosocial support to the survivors. NGO specialized in the fight against GBV begun to develop prevention and response activities based on individuals and communities needs. For example, they provide a wide range of services such as legal, medical, psychosocial and economic support. They help communities to become aware of anti-GBV laws in Nepal, as well as human basic rights. Through specific trainings, they guide women to develop an income-generating skills. This will lead them to build their own economic independence. Decreasing their financial reliance on men, the women lessening also their vulnerability to abuse. The number of cases are reducing over time as violence against women becomes socially less acceptable. Of course the path for eliminate the Gender Based Violence is still long and complicated. Compared to the past seems that something is improving, not only about the women condition, but also in the mentality in the society. An equal world where women and men are on the same level will surely guarantee a better future for humanity, and it will contribute to develop an aware society where everyone have the same rights and opportunities.
