Flanders Fields Battle of Passchendaele 100 year Anniversary.

I had my writers hat on alongside my photographic duties on a feature in Flanders, Belgium over the last couple of weeks. This year is the 100th anniversary of the Batte of Passchendaele from the First World War. Passchendaele rates alongside Verdun and The Somme as one of the major military exchanges of that bloody and destructive war. However, Passchendaele is often viewed as, with in a war of numerous instances of pointless loss of life, a pinnacle in wasted life. Over a 2 month campaign 8km of land were taken around the Village of Passchendaele at the loss of 250,000 allied soldiers and a slightly less number of defending German troops. This territory was then re-taken over a 2 week period in a counter attack with the trench lines ending up pretty much where they had all started from. The story and images will be out in Novemeber and the attached image is of the Menin Gate in Ypres which is a monument to the 100,000 Commonwealkth soldiers who were killed on the Western Front and whose bodies were never found. Instead buried deep some where with in the Battlefields grounds on Flanders soil.
