Girls Can’t Skate spotlights an all-female and non-binary skateboarding community in New York City. By exploring these women’s shared passion and resilience, it celebrates female empowerment in contrast to the machismo culture and normalized violence against women that plagues much of the world.

These women are challenging barriers of the traditionally male-dominated sport at a historic moment for skateboarding, which will be part of the next Olympic Games. The images were captured before the COVID-19 pandemic, and then during the lockdown via FaceTime.

Statement of purpose:

As a photographer and storyteller, I am convinced that we can use our cameras as a tool for social change. My work now focuses mainly on women issues and gender inequality, including my latest projects, Girls Can’t Skate, about the all-female skateboarding community in New York City and Miss Orion, the story of a first-generation Peruvian-American stripper who shifted to become a professional dominatrix in the midst of a global pandemic, and her fight to decriminalize sex work through social media.   Having spent my whole life in Mexico, where violence against women and machismo culture are normalized, I want to amplify women and non-binary voices with the belief that we as people should be equal.

I want to be part of  Native Agency. I want to be part of a true community where you can interact, be heard and seen.   I want to understand the photography industry. I want to get connections, to build relationships and to grow my network.

I want to continue experimenting in an international environment so I can transform my work and perspective. This includes learning first-hand from creators dedicated to the world of photography and connecting with peers of different backgrounds, experiences, and languages.

I am sure that with this opportunity my practice will expand on many levels, and I will achieve a better understanding of myself as a woman and storyteller by taking part in projects, assisting to meetings, getting feedback, and learning from other Native photographers.
