The Anastasio Hernández Rojas mural project is a large-scale mural in Chicano Park, located in the Barrio Logan neighborhood of San Diego. The mural is dedicated to Rojas, to honor him on the 10th anniversary of his death (he was beaten and tased by border patrol agents). The project is led by well-known and pioneer Chicano art muralist Victor Ochoa (who has painted and designed numerous murals in Chicano Park over the years). The mural depicts recent scenes of injustice in the Borderlands, and highlights a cry for justice and understanding concerning the human condition, focusing especially on the treatment of migrants. A highlight of the mural is a large portrait of Hernández Rojas in the top center of the mural. The sacred space of Chicano Park is an outdoor art gallery, with large murals painted on the pillars under the San Diego-Coronado bridge. My photos show some of the process of the painting of the mural, highlighting the artists and workers, while at the same time offering a focus on the surroundings and environment or a "sense of place" in Chicano Park.
