About
1956 was the year when Nikita Khrushchev denounced Stalin’s excesses and the first H-bomb was tested but it was also the year Andrei Iliescu was born in a family with a long artistic tradition. The parents were hoping their son would follow into their footsteps and embrace a career as a sculptor or painter. Andrei, on the other hand, was dreaming of conquering the world with his full-manual Russian camera.Art in the communist era was a dead end though and he chose instead to study and later make a living as an engineer.During the revolution in December 1989 Andrei wandered the streets with his camera and took advantage of the chance he had been waiting for 33 years. Romanians were free again and he couldn’t be less –resigning his job, he pursued the long expected career as a photographer. Iliescu spent 8 years working for prestigious press agencies such as AFP, EPA or AP and then moved towards commercial photography. Different worlds, both offering its set of challenges. He managed to face them all, to learn and grow into becoming one of the most respected Romanian professional photographers.
