Tanzania
Of all the regions in the world, sub-Saharan Africa is the most hostile to
albinos,In Tanzania there is 1 albino for every 1,400 inhabitants, an average
well above the world, which has 1 for every 20,000.According to data from
the NGO Under The Sun, since 2006 more than 500 albinos have been attacked
in Africa by people seeking to do rituals with their bodies. Ukerewe, an island
located on Lake Victoria in Tanzania, has become a safe place for them,
where some organizations give them projection and attention. Tanzania is one
of the countries in Africa where more albinos die because of the mistaken
belief that their bodies bring good luck, arms, legs, fingers or mutilated ears
can cost thousands of dollars in the black market, the “ Warlocks ”cook their
parts and then bury them where people want them to bring luck; for example,
in mining deposits. Behind this, a perverse practice dominated by Mafia hides,
which in general are led by people with a lot of economic power. On the other
hand, the scorching sun characteristic of the continent has no mercy with
their eyes and their skin that are vulnerable to cancer, because of this and the
fear of being attacked that they spend most of the day locked in their homes
and rooms, where they were portrayed, for being the place where they felt
safer. Although thanks to various NGOs and government campaigns, violence
and discrimination towards albinos have been decreasing, their lives are still
marked by abandonment, discrimination, poverty, violence, and diseases,
such as skin cancer and blindness.
