Speaking with Light: Contemporary Indigenous Photography
October 30, 2022 - January 22, 2023
Through the exhibition, viewers are encouraged to consider the work in relation to their own lives. While focused on the last thirty years, the exhibition intimately connects with the past. From the beginning, viewers are immersed in a room of delegation images, evidence of indigenous sovereignty. Subsequent chapters of the show include “Suvivance,” “Nation,” and “Indigenous Visualities.” As co-curator Will Wilson shares in the show’s accompanying virtual exhibition, “Photography has the power to tell amazing stories that can be generative in the way they transform the world around us through life, narration, and the perspectives of the makers.”
Artists featured in Speaking with Light include Jeremy Dennis, Nicholas Galanin, Sky Hopinka, Zig Jackson, Kapulani Landgraf, Dylan McLaughlin, Alan Michelson, Shelley Niro, Jolene Rickard, Wendy Red Star, Cara Romero, Hulleah Tsinhnahjinnie, and Sarah Sense.
The Amon Carter Museum offers weekly tours of the show and a virtual multimedia exhibition experience on its website.
