HOUSTON, TEXAS - On Saturday, October 22, 2022, The Assembly Gallery will host Conversations with Collectors: Vasantha Yogananthan with Anjli Patel & Parambir Keila. This event will take place on Zoom from 10:30 am until 11:30 am CT and feature a live discussion with artist Vasantha Yogananthan, whose major body of work A Myth of Two Souls is now on view at the Assembly Gallery, and Toronto-based collectors Anjli Patel & Parambir Keila. A question and answer will immediately follow the discussion.
A Myth of Two Souls is a photographic retelling of Ramayana, a Sanskrit epic from ancient India. The story follows the journey and adventures of Prince Rama and Princess Sita. In this tale, Prince Rama is on a quest to rescue his wife, Sita, from Ravana. With a large format camera, Yogananthan traveled from Nepal through India to Sri Lanka to explore the influence of this tale in India today. Intertwining staged moments with scenes from daily life, Yoganathan draws on imagery from the myth to construct a new experience and perspective of the story for the viewer. These unique photographs are colored by Indian artist, Jaykumar Shankar, using the ancient technique of hand-painting, a method traditionally reserved for wealthy patrons. In Yogananthan’s work, the Rayamana tale is reimagined in a new way.
A Myth of Two Souls is on view at Assembly through November 5, 2022.
About the Artist
Vasantha Yogananthan’s photographic practice addresses the space between documentary and fiction. Using natural light and analog processes, he perceives photography as a malleable material open to interpretations. The book has been central to his work since the beginning. In 2014, he co-founded the publishing house Chose Commune and published his first book, Piemanson. In his books, he interweaves staged photography with scenes from everyday life, thus exploring different forms of photographic storytelling. He has received several awards, including the IdeasTap Magnum Photos Award (2015), The Levallois Award (2016), and an ICP Infinity Award as Emerging Photographer of the Year (2017). That same year was also selected among the 2017 FOAM Talents.
