Highland County,VIrginia, encompassing the western border of the Shenandoah valley seems to be losing it's population quickly. Originally inhabited by Scottish and Irish highlanders, and some German immigrants, in the last twenty years, many have left. I have found a brilliantly luxurious landscape compared with empty homes that appear to have been left quickly, for some unknown reason. the memory of life, the quiet afternoons on the porch, or a tractor used for years, now left quietly rusting in the rain, this is what inspired me.
