Michael Nguyen visited the Werksviertel in Munich in 2020, 2021 and 2022. His series about the Werksviertel in Munich, a beloved alternative scene for local artists and innovators shows a place which is going since years under modernization and was a creative ruin. Pfanni used to produce dumplings and mashed potatoes here. Now converted industrial buildings and numerous new buildings provide architectural exclamation points and a metropolitan field of tension. That is unique in Munich and is also alive with a diverse street art scene.

The creative community renders the industrial site enjoyable and makes us think about our modern world. Where once potato dumplings were made, a creative urban district with a colorful mix of art and culture will appear in the next few years on the eastern edge of Munich's city center.

The charm of the existing industrial architecture contrasts with the contemporary new buildings. In contrast to many other urban developments, the historic structures serve as an exciting contrast to modern buildings. Street artists have a temporary space for their art.

A German journalist writes aptly in a German daily newspaper: "But already the excavators are scratching at the building. Demolition and construction are going on in the factory district, and the machines are not standing still. Colored debris along the roadside testifies to former street art; transience is a constant companion of art in public space. What impresses today will be dust tomorrow." (Laura Kaufmann, Süddeutsche Zeitung)

After all former companies like Pfanni had moved away, from 1996 the area was called Kunstpark Ost, then Kultfabrik, then Optimolwerke. Until the beginning of 2000, party people flocked to the site en masse. Then it was over and no one really knew what was to come. Since 2012, there has been a concept and a development plan.
